KILIMANJARO CLIMBING ITINERARY - UMBWE ROUTE
Day 0: Arrival in Moshi
Arrive in Moshi, the gateway to Kilimanjaro, where you’ll be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel. This day is reserved for resting and acclimatizing to the lower altitude.
If time permits, explore Moshi’s vibrant markets and local attractions, like the National Museum. Enjoy a traditional Tanzanian meal in the evening and attend a pre-climb briefing, where your guide will outline the itinerary, safety protocols, and necessary gear.
Use this time to mentally prepare for the adventure ahead and ensure you have everything ready for the climb.
Day 1: Moshi to Umbwe Gate – Trek to Umbwe Camp
After a hearty breakfast, depart for the Umbwe Gate, which takes about a 1–2-hour drive. At the gate, complete the registration process before starting your trek. The hike to Umbwe Camp, located at an altitude of 2,850 meters, typically takes about 5-6 hours.
This part of the trail winds through lush rainforests, where you may spot monkeys and various bird species. The scenery is mesmerizing, with towering trees and vibrant greenery.
Upon reaching Umbwe Camp, set up your tents, enjoy dinner, and reflect on your first day of trekking as the sounds of the forest surround you.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
After breakfast, begin your trek to Barranco Camp, located at 3,960 meters. This hike takes around 6-7 hours and involves navigating steep trails and rocky terrain. The trek offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and Kilimanjaro’s majestic peaks.
As you ascend, you’ll pass through the moorland zone, characterized by unique vegetation, including giant heathers. Arriving at Barranco Camp, you’ll be greeted by spectacular views of the Barranco Wall, which you’ll conquer the next day.
Enjoy dinner, share stories with fellow climbers, and relax under the stars, preparing for the challenges ahead.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, tackle the Barranco Wall, a steep climb that tests your strength and determination. This section takes approximately 2-3 hours, and the views from the top are rewarding. Once at the top, continue your trek to Karanga Camp, located at 4,000 meters, which takes an additional 2-3 hours.
The landscape transitions to a more rugged alpine environment, offering stunning vistas and unique flora. Upon arrival, set up camp and enjoy lunch.
Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing, preparing for the upcoming ascent to the higher altitudes. Enjoy dinner at camp and a peaceful night in the wilderness.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Start your day with breakfast at Karanga Camp before setting off for Barafu Camp, situated at an altitude of 4,600 meters. The trek typically takes around 4-5 hours, leading you through rocky terrain and increasingly sparse vegetation.
Upon reaching Barafu Camp, take time to rest and hydrate, as this will be your base for the summit attempt. Enjoy a hearty dinner early in the evening and prepare for the challenging night ahead.
Ensure your gear is ready for the summit climb, and rest as much as possible, as you’ll be starting your ascent in the early hours of the next morning.
Day 5: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – Descent to Mweka Camp
Awake around midnight for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. After a light breakfast, begin your climb, which generally takes 6-8 hours. The trail is steep and challenging, but the determination to reach the summit will motivate you.
As dawn approaches, witness the breathtaking sunrise illuminating the landscape, providing encouragement to continue. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, take photos and celebrate your achievement before descending back to Barafu Camp for a short break.
Continue your descent to Mweka Camp, located at 3,100 meters, which takes around 4-5 hours. Enjoy a celebratory dinner at Mweka Camp and share your incredible summit stories with fellow climbers.
Day 6: Mweka Gate to Moshi
On your final day, enjoy breakfast at Mweka Camp before starting the descent to Mweka Gate. The trek down typically takes about 3-4 hours, winding through lush rainforests and offering opportunities to see local wildlife.
Once at Mweka Gate, complete the check-out process and receive your summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Moshi, where you can celebrate your accomplishment with a well-deserved meal and reflect on the unforgettable journey you’ve experienced.

Day 7: Moshi to KIA for Departure
After an early breakfast, based on the flight schedule, you can either enjoy a city or cultural tour, or opt for a visit to Materuni Waterfall. Later in the afternoon, you will be transferred directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure.”
