Tanzania’s largest wilderness — untamed wildlife, dramatic river valleys, and exceptional safari experiences
Ruaha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular safari destinations and the largest national park in the country, covering over 20,000 km² of rugged wilderness. Named for the mighty Great Ruaha River that winds through the park and feeds abundant wildlife, Ruaha is famed for its intense predator action, huge elephant populations, and rich birdlife — a true haven for safari enthusiasts seeking an authentic wilderness experience far from the crowds.
Ruaha National Park is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife. You’ll see elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, roan and sable antelope, greater kudu, hippos, and Nile crocodiles. The park also supports one of the largest lion populations in Africa and packs of endangered African wild dogs — a rare and thrilling sight for safari travelers. Birdlife is spectacular, with over 500 species, including raptors, storks, hornbills, and colorful migrants.
The dry season (June–October) is widely regarded as the best time for wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around the Great Ruaha River and waterholes making sightings more predictable. The wet or green season (November–May) transforms the park into lush greenery and is ideal for birdwatchers and photographers — especially from December to April when many migratory birds arrive.
Ruaha National Park can be accessed by scheduled flights to Msembe or Jongomero airstrips from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, or other major hubs, offering a fast and scenic way into the park. By road, the park lies about 130 km from Iringa town and can be reached in approximately 2–3 hours; 4×4 vehicles are recommended, especially during the wet season.
Accommodation in Ruaha ranges from luxury lodges and tented safari camps near the Great Ruaha River to more rustic bush camps spread throughout the park. Booking early is advised during the dry season when demand is at its highest. Staying multiple nights increases the chance of seeing elusive species and enjoying varied game drives at different times of day.

It was the most amazing experience I could have imagined when I went on a 6-day safari excursion with Maramatta Safaris in MAY 2024.It was really well thought out and put together. Our driver and guide made sure everything went as planned. They were both really competent and informed, not to mention incredibly nice, gregarious, talkative, and enjoyable. Additionally, we had a fantastic cook who managed the meals for the duration of the trip.We were meant to tent for a few nights because we went with the less expensive option, but Glory upgraded us for free and we stayed in gorgeous lodges instead. at addition, we stayed two nights at her comfortable guesthouse in Arusha, both before and after the trip. It was a fantastic value for the money all around. The professionalism and focus on the needs of the customer exhibited by the whole Maramatta Safaris team truly impressed me. They went above and above to ensure that we could unwind and savor the enchantment of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire—their wildlife, scenery, and ambiance. I was infatuated with it.
