Mahale Mountains National Park
Home of one of Africa’s largest chimpanzee populations, pristine rainforest, Lake Tanganyika beaches and unique wildlife experiences
Overview
Mahale Mountains National Park is a remote and breathtaking conservation area on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. It is world-famous for its thriving population of wild chimpanzees and lush rainforest slopes that rise sharply from one of the deepest and oldest freshwater lakes on the planet. Unlike the open plains of northern parks, Mahale’s beauty lies in its rugged mountain forests, spectacular chimpanzee trekking, vibrant birdlife and serene sandy beaches that border crystal-clear waters.
Mahale Mountains National Park – Quick Facts
Why Visit Mahale Mountains National Park
- See some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa in their natural rainforest habitat.
- Experience unique rainforest trekking combined with spectacular lake views.
- Enjoy pristine white sandy beaches along the shore of Lake Tanganyika.
- Encounter rare birdlife and diverse flora in the Albertine Rift region.
Wildlife & Nature
The park protects one of the largest protected populations of eastern chimpanzees, with an estimated 700–1000 individuals habituated for tracking. In addition to chimps, Mahale supports a rich array of wildlife including colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, yellow baboons, warthogs, bush pigs, leopards, elephants and forest antelope species. Along the lake’s shoreline, hippos and crocodiles are often seen, while the clear waters hold over 250 endemic fish species. The park’s birdlife is equally impressive with more than 350 species including Pel’s fishing owl, palm nut vulture and Ross’s turaco.
Best Time to Visit Mahale Mountains National Park
Mahale is a year-round destination but the most favorable time for chimpanzee trekking, hiking and lake activities is the dry season from June to October, when trails are clear and wildlife is easier to spot. During this period, chimpanzees are more active and often descend closer to the forest edge. The wet season (November to May) brings lush landscapes, excellent birdwatching and dramatic thunderstorms over the lake, though roads and trails can be muddy.
Activities & Experiences
- Chimpanzee Trekking – guided rainforest walks to observe habituated wild chimp groups.
- Hiking Mount Nkungwe – climb to panoramic viewpoints over the mountains and lake.
- Birdwatching – spot rare and endemic bird species with expert guides.
- Water Adventures – snorkeling, kayaking and swimming in the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika.
- Beach Relaxation – enjoy quiet sandy beaches framed by lush mountains.
Getting There
Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the more remote safari destinations in Tanzania, accessible by a combination of flights, road transfers and boat rides. The easiest option is to fly into Kigoma from major hubs like Arusha or Dar es Salaam and continue by speedboat or traditional boat across Lake Tanganyika to reach park camps. 4×4 road access via dusty tracks from Kigoma is possible during dry months, though slower and more challenging.
Practical Information
- Permits and local guides are required for all chimpanzee trekking and authorised trails.
- Park entry fees directly support chimpanzee conservation and rainforest protection.
- Guided experiences improve safety and wildlife encounters — independent entry is not permitted.
- Remote conditions mean limited connectivity and basic village-style accommodations near the park.
Accommodation & Safari Tips
Accommodation in Mahale ranges from rustic forest camps to boutique tented lodges overlooking Lake Tanganyika. Many visitors choose eco-friendly lodges that offer guided chimp trekking, nature walks and water activities as part of tailored safari packages. Book early if traveling in the dry season to secure prime beach or forest locations.

It was the most amazing experience I could have imagined when I went on a 6-day safari excursion with Maramatta Safaris in MAY 2024.It was really well thought out and put together. Our driver and guide made sure everything went as planned. They were both really competent and informed, not to mention incredibly nice, gregarious, talkative, and enjoyable.
