KILIMANJARO CLIMBING ITINERARY - MACHAME ROUTE
Day 0: Arrival in Moshi
Upon arrival in Moshi, a vibrant town at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, you’ll be greeted by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Take some time to relax and acclimatize to the altitude. Depending on your arrival time, explore the town’s rich culture, perhaps visiting local markets or the National Museum.
In the evening, attend a pre-climb briefing where your guide will discuss the trek details, equipment, and safety measures. Enjoy a delicious dinner featuring Tanzanian cuisine, fuelling your body for the adventure ahead. Rest well, as you’ll embark on your climb tomorrow.
Day 1: Moshi to Machame Camp
After a hearty breakfast, you’ll depart for Machame Gate, where your adventure officially begins. After registering at the gate, start your trek through the lush rainforest, characterized by towering trees and vibrant wildlife.
The hike to Machame Camp, situated at 3,000 meters, typically takes around 5-7 hours. As you navigate the well-marked trails, enjoy the sounds of nature and the fresh mountain air.
Upon reaching Machame Camp, you’ll set up your tents, enjoy a well-deserved dinner, and share stories under the stars. Embrace the camaraderie with fellow climbers as you prepare for the next day’s journey.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After breakfast, you’ll embark on a trek to Shira Camp, located at an altitude of 3,840 meters. This section of the trek usually takes 5-6 hours and involves ascending through moorland, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes.
The flora changes as you ascend, featuring unique plants like giant lobelias. Upon arrival at Shira Camp, take some time to relax and soak in the breathtaking views.
Enjoy a hearty dinner while reflecting on the day’s adventures, and rest well in preparation for the ascent to Barranco Camp the following day.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Your day begins with a nourishing breakfast before heading to Barranco Camp, situated at 3,960 meters. This leg of the trek takes around 6-7 hours and includes a gradual ascent along the Shira Plateau.
Enjoy the diverse ecosystems and mesmerising vistas as you hike. After a scenic lunch, continue your journey toward Barranco, where you will descend into the Barranco Valley.
Upon reaching Barranco Camp, set up your tents and enjoy dinner while marveling at the impressive Barranco Wall looming above. Prepare for the exciting climb of the wall tomorrow, which offers an exhilarating challenge.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, tackle the exhilarating Barranco Wall, which requires some scrambling but rewards you with stunning views from the top.
After conquering the wall, the trek continues to Karanga Camp at an altitude of 4,000 meters, typically taking 4-5 hours. Enjoy the varied landscapes, with opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.
Upon arrival at Karanga Camp, take time to rest and rejuvenate. Enjoy a warm meal, and as night falls, soak in the tranquility of the mountain environment. This is an essential day to acclimatise before the final ascent to Barafu Camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Following breakfast, you’ll begin your trek to Barafu Camp, located at 4,640 meters. This section typically takes 4-5 hours and involves navigating rocky terrain while enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.
Barafu Camp serves as the base for your final ascent to the summit, so take this time to rest and prepare. Enjoy an early dinner and hydrate well as you will rise before dawn for the summit attempt.
Ensure your gear is ready for the cold, as temperatures will drop significantly at higher altitudes. Rest is crucial for the final push to Uhuru Peak.
Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak – Descent to Moshi
On the final day, wake up before dawn and have a light breakfast to fuel your ascent to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point at 5,895 meters. The climb typically takes 6-8 hours and can be strenuous, requiring determination and focus.
Enjoy the sunrise as you approach the summit, a truly unforgettable moment. Once at Uhuru Peak, take time to celebrate your achievement and capture the stunning views. Afterward, begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
Here, you’ll enjoy a celebratory dinner and share stories of your incredible journey. The next day, descend to Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate, and transfer back to Moshi for a well-deserved celebration.
Day 7: Moshi to KIA for Departure
After an early breakfast, based on the flight schedule, you can either enjoy a city or cultural tour, or opt for a visit to Materuni Waterfall. Later in the afternoon, you will be transferred directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure.
Important Notes to Consider Before Climbing via Machame Route
- Physical Fitness: Climbing Kilimanjaro requires good physical fitness. It’s essential to engage in regular cardiovascular and strength training exercises several months before your trek.
