The island’s forests and woodlands are home to semi-habituated chimpanzees, elephants, giraffes, bushbucks, sitatungas (semi-aquatic antelope), hippos, crocodiles, otters, genets, and several primate species. Birdlife is exceptional with endemic and migratory species such as African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, ibises, storks, cormorants, and parrots. Aquatic life in the clear waters of Lake Victoria includes Nile perch, tilapia, and other fish species, enhancing the park’s biodiversity importance.

Best Time to Visit Rubondo Island

The optimum time to explore Rubondo Island National Park is during the dry season (June to October) when trails are more accessible, wildlife viewing is easier, and chimpanzee trekking opportunities are higher. Birdwatchers may also enjoy excellent sightings from December to February when many migratory bird species visit the island’s lakeshore habitats.

Getting There

Rubondo Island National Park lies approximately 150 km west of Mwanza in northwest Tanzania. Visitors can reach the island by scheduled or charter flights to Rubondo Airstrip from cities such as Mwanza, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Kigali, followed by a short transfer to camp. Alternatively, road travel to ports like Mwanza, Nkome, or Muganza followed by a boat crossing gives a scenic approach over Lake Victoria.
